По всей видимости, создателям видеоигр не всегда удается выработать собственное видение лавкрафтовской истории не опираясь при этом на другие игры и даже другие медиа. В результате эта история превращается в нечто, на оригинального Лавкрафта не похожее: она становится знакомой, прирученной, предсказуемой и клишированной. Такие игры продают то, чего, предположительно, хотят поклонники творчества Лавкрафта.

Игры, которые опираются только на сочетание номинальных и иконографических признаков рискуют превратиться в лавкрафтовский фансервис, в который пытаются добавить все, что понравится абстрактному «любителю лавкрафта».

В то же время, игры могут быть принципиально не способны справиться с центральными столпами творчества Лавкрафта: неописуемостью и непознаваемостью. Играм нужны понятные правила, параметры и зависимости. Возможная сложность заключается в том, что работающий игровой процесс априори противоречит заложенным в сюжете лавкрафтовским темам, неизбежно мешая их развитию.
